Summer bronzebacks from flowing waters

Smallmouth bass are commonly found in NWPA’s area streams. They have self sustaining populations and are native to most waters of the area. These fish are great fighters and regularly leap from the water when hooked on rod and reel. Using 6lb line on a light rod can make things even more interesting while bass fishing the smaller waters.

Most of the bigger fish inhabit French Creek or the Allegheny River, but any of the smaller streams that feed these larger flowing waters contain numbers of nice sized smallmouth bass. Oil Creek and Brokenstraw Creek offer good smallmouth fishing. Live bait such as worms, minnows, and crayfish work well for these fish. Small to medium sized spinners, Rapalas, and jigs can also be used to lure smallmouth bass in creeks and streams.

Another fun way to catch smallmouth bass in streams is by using a fly rod. Streamers and poppers often induce hammering strikes from bronze backs. One fly I like to use resembles a crayfish, but many of the same flies used for trout will also catch smallmouths.

Wet wading is a popular way to cool off in summer while fishing for smallmouth bass in area streams. Exploring the stream is fun and moving around will keep you in the action. An old pair of tennis shoes can be used, but wearing a pair of hip waders can prevent leeches from putting a damper on your relaxing day on the water. Don’t forget the bug spray and sunblock either.

If you are looking for some fun fishing action, try some of the area’s flowing waters this summer for smallmouth bass. Remember to always ask permission before fishing on privately owned land and to pack out whatever you take in. Respecting the landowners will ensure continued access to the valuable fishing opportunities in our area.
