Bear Hunters should be excited about the upcoming archery hunt. There has definitely been an upswing in hunter interest and it is reflecting in bear harvest numbers. Three of the last five largest bear harvests on record have occurred in the past three years. Mark Ternent, the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s bear biologist, reports that black bear populations are at record levels. There is an estimated 18,000 bears living within the Keystone State. There are several opportunities to hunt for these bears in Pennsylvania.

The statewide archery bear season opens Monday, Nov. 17 and comes to a close on Nov. 21.  The four day general bear hunting season opens Saturday, Nov. 22 and extends to Wednesday, Nov. 26.

“The pieces are all in place for yet another banner year of bear hunting in Pennsylvania,”Game Commission Executive Director R. Mathew Hough said. “Only time will tell if a record number of hunters will bring about a record harvest. But I can guarantee all of those who celebrate our hunting heritage in this special season have a fantastic opportunity to harvest an exceptional animal.”
