Discovering the Hidden Depths of Istanbul
The city with multiple identities has a number of hidden gems, and many are in plain sight – you just have to know how to look for them. With a maze like construction it is easy to get lost in this ancient place, but in many ways this is the best way to see the city. As soon as you step off the beaten path you stumble upon the real gems, which are infinitely more beautiful than the Spoonmaker’s diamond which is housed in the nearby Topkapi Palace. With hundreds of flights to Turkey arriving in the city everyday there is no excuse for you to miss out on the sights and sounds of Istanbul.
Although a major tourist attraction, Topkapi Palace is worth exploring. The palace is beautifully decorated and is also home to the Spoonmaker’s diamond, one of the largest gems in the world. With an abundance of history there is so much to take in, with hundreds of rooms and chambers displaying fine Ottoman architecture.
The Grand Bazaar is an ancient marketplace in the heart of the city and with around five and a half thousand vendors you can find almost anything on these ancient streets. With an abundance of cashmere, carpets and trinkets you can spend a whole day admiring the wares of the stallholders. Remember to veer off the beaten path though, you never know what you might find on the road less travelled.
The Blue Mosque is an amazing building, an awe-inspiring place that has to been seen to be believed. With millions of hand painted tiles it is hard to believe that a place like this exists, as hard work and artisan crafts have come together to culminate in this pious monument.
With alleys leading to hidden treasure, you can easily imagine Aladdin wandering along the ancient streets in the city looking for an appropriate place to stash his hoard. Istanbul is an amazing city, full of wonder and enlightening sights, sounds and experiences.
