October in NWPA

Welcome to October. The chill is in the air and the leaves are beginning to show their autumn color. September’s end brought hints toward October’s Halloween themes. A strange looking paddlefish was caught from the Allegheny River, The Blood Moon captivated spectators, and heavily antlered bull elk began their eerie bugling in the hollows of Benezette before the month even began.

October in NWPA

Now that October is here, there will be a lot more going on in the outdoors. The deer archery season is here. Monster rutting bucks will appear with increasing frequency during the daylight hours as the peak of their breeding season draws near. Archer’s will soak in their surroundings watching the days unfold while anticipating that moment when a deer will appear. Hook jawed and hefty bellied steelhead are filling area tributaries and will draw anglers to the area. Large toothed fish like musky and river dwelling walleye will be putting on the feed bag before winter and will also garner anglers’ interest.

There is much more to October than the outstanding hunting and fishing. Area outdoor attractions offer activities such as corn mazes, guided tours, and haunted hayrides. Visiting pumpkin farms and enjoying local outdoors events are great ways to spend time with family and friends. Just being outdoors enjoying the fresh air and taking in this festive season’s scenery can be relaxing during the fall season.
