Spotlighting areas of the UK each week

In our new blog series, each Tuesday we’ll be spotlighting a place, route, natural occurrence or landmark around the UK. This week, we’re heading to Brecon Beacons National Park to a small village called Ystradfellte.

Brecon Beacons National Park is a stunning area of Wales which is especially good for walkers and climbers alike. Near the south end of the National Park on the Afon Mellte in the Fforest Fawr area is  village by the name of Ystradfellte.

While the village is a quaint, with a great little pub called ‘The New Inn’ at the heart of it all, it’s the surrounding area that draws in tourists from around the UK and beyond. Surrounded by lush wooded valleys, the area is perhaps most known for it’s waterfalls and caves.

Caving
The caves in the local area make Ystradfellte popular for caving, with Porth yr Ogof (the largest cave opening in Wales) among the most visited.

Other popular caving areas include: The Little Neath River Cave and Ogof Ffynnon Ddu – the third-longest cave in Britain.

Walking
If caving isn’t your thing, then walking is probably the most popular way to see  Ystradfellte. The area is part of what some know as ‘Waterfall country’ which is an area of stunning publicly accessible waterfalls in South Wales.

Them most popular walk of all in this area is the ‘waterfalls walk’ a relatively easy walk that will take you along the Afon Mellte. The walk passes by two waterfalls along  the river: Sgŵd Clun-gwyn and Sgŵd Isaf Clun-gwyn. The crowning moment of the walk, is where the footpath passes behind the Sgŵd yr Eira waterfall.

There are longer walks in the area for more seasoned walkers that will take you past more of the waterfalls in the area.

The area around Ystradfellte offers up some fantastic opportunities for photography and is well worth checking out if you’re in the Brecon Beacons area of Wales.
