Wisconsin Maritime Museum

Located on the Manitowoc River just off Lake Michigan, this museum is full of great lakes artifacts and exhibits. There are ship building displays as well as many beautiful models of ships that traveled the great lakes years ago. The SS Cobia, a World War II Submarine is on permanent display and a centerpiece exhibit for the museum.

We stayed at the Best Western Lakefront right next door to the museum which was very convenient. Crossing lake Michigan on the afternoon sailing of the SS Badger car ferry was on our agenda so we had the whole morning to explore the museum.

With over 60,000 square feet of displays there was a lot to see. Many interactive stations make this a great learning experience. There are tours of the SS Cobia which last around 45 minutes so plan ahead and reserve a spot so you can catch your ride on the SS Badger if that is why you are in Manitowoc.

One of the first things we did at the museum was visit the submarine simulator. You really got a feel for what those brave sailors experienced as they fought for our freedom and way of life.

This is not the Smithsonian so you do not need to plan on a whole day unless you sign up for some of the educational programs. If you really what to immerse yourself in the Maritime theme you can book an overnight on the SS Cobia . These programs are for groups or families and must be booked in advance.

There is a great kids area in the lower level called the Little Lakefarers Room, where kids can do hands on experiments with water studying waves and currents. I wanted to play around there.
