From the invitation before the wedding to the dessert bar at the very end, pretty paper goods can help  you establish a theme, and set the tone for your whole wedding. Luckily, Rebecca Schley of Design District , can do it all, creating anything from invites to favor tags, giving your wedding a perfect personalized touch. Rebecca tells us about her graphic design experience and what trends to expect for 2013:
What is Design District, and how did it get it’s start?

Design District is my freelance design business.  I am a graphic designer based in DC, and I specialize in designing print collateral – from brochures to invitations to menus.

I got my start designing for events and weddings after an event planner saw my work and asked me if I could design paper good items for her events.  I still do some corporate work but the majority of my clients are now event related. I happily work with both planners to brides themselves.

Besides invitations, what other custom paper goods can you create?

I can do (pretty much) anything a client can dream up. I’ve designed everything from logos for an event to signage, programs, menu cards, escort cards, favor tags and anything else you might need. It is great when a bride wants to carry a theme through each part of the event.

How do you first begin conceptualizing paper goods for a client? What kinds of things should clients know before they come in?

All of my work is custom to the client, I do not have any templates or set designs, everything I create is from scratch. The process always starts with a conversation of what the client’s style is, what colors they are thinking about, and together we will form a look and feel.  This conversation takes place either in person, on the phone or even over email depending on the clients schedule.

From the information they provide, I then create two or three rough concepts for them to choose from.  I try to make each draft concept different so that clients can visualize their options or even pick and choose choose aspects from different designs to put together.

It is always helpful when clients have a good idea of the look or feel they’d like to convey, but I’ll work off as much or as little information as they have. My process is very personal, so I’m happy to meet a client where they are in their visioning process.

Have you noticed any trends in paper good recently?

I’m seeing a lot of glam and glitter right now. There are some beautiful designs using foil, and you can do a lot of unique things with lasercut. I try to pay attention to trends and incorporate them where they fit, but I never want to do something just because everyone else is doing it. You can never go wrong with classics like good quality paper and letterpress.
