When you think of shopping for wedding attire, looking for a bridal gown is the first thing that comes to mind. But don’t be so quick to disregard the grooms duds- a good fitting suit can be hard to find! Luckily,聽 Michael Andrews Bespoke just opened their doors to a brand new D.C. shop, and we promise it’s one you won’t want to miss.

When and how did Michael Andrews Bespoke get its start?聽

Michael Andrews Bespoke opened in 2006 after CEO/Co-Founder Michael Andrews wore a suit and tie to work every day for nearly eight years and couldn鈥檛 find one that fit to his liking. After trying more than a dozen tailors, he decided to open his own shop to make exactly what he wanted.

Tell us about your DC store.聽

Our DC store takes up the second and third floors of a traditional townhouse in Dupont Circle. The design of the space reflects our approach to tailoring 鈥?a thoughtful balance between modern and traditional 鈥?and blends the high-polish look of the New York flagship with the relaxed feel of a well-appointed townhome. 聽We have large leather chairs in front of our working fire place, an oversized velvet couch in a large bay window and most popular, our 8鈥?fully-stocked (complimentary) marble bar. 聽Fittings are done in Michael鈥檚 third-floor office, which is outfitted in the style of a gentleman鈥檚 library.

What makes your company different than other menswear shops?

As a former corporate lawyer, Michael understands the mindset and expectations of our clients. If we promise to have something delivered by a certain date, we deliver it. We also have the advantage over traditional retailors that once a client places an order, he will be back to see us at least once and sometimes two or three more times for the duration of the order. We use this time to get to know each of our clients 鈥?to understand their lifestyle, their plans for wearing the suit, how they dress on a regular basis. We can then make wardrobe suggestions based on this information. We are in the business of making wardrobes that match the person and what he wants 鈥?not just what we think he should wear.

What should grooms look for when selecting a wedding look, and about how far in advance is best to begin shopping?

Grooms should start thinking more like brides when it comes to wedding shopping. The dress process begins many months in advance and that鈥檚 ideally when the groom should start thinking about his ensemble too because it lends much more flexibility. We can make suits in about two months, but working on a tight deadline leaves the bride and groom slightly anxious and options limited 鈥?whereas, we鈥檝e made tuxedos and suits months in advance that are exactly what the groom wanted and he can come in for fittings at leisure. We聽are also happy to hang on to garments for the time between the fitting and the wedding for (extra!) safekeeping.

Have you noticed any trends in menswear for weddings?

We鈥檝e noticed more grooms selecting the shawl lapel for their tuxedos and more tuxedo shirts opting for a bib front with a classic color over the plain front that has dominated for so long. Also, thanks in part to Ryan Gosling, more guys are getting comfortable with midnight blue or blue tuxedos for the big day.
