There are almost always “hiccups” and stumbling blocks as you plan a wedding and now Marybeth has hit one of her own…our fingers are crossed that she finds a happy solution — I just know that she will!

When I started writing this week’s post, the title of a favorite childhood book came to mind and I thought, Are You There God? It’s Me, Marybeth.  A few months ago, James wrote a post about finding the perfect church .  After weeks of searching and attending services, we had found the one and started attending weekly services.

When I got word of my move to San Diego, James and I discussed how we would join a church in San Diego, meet with the rector there as well as the rector in DC during trips home.  Surely, we thought, the church in DC would understand and, knowing we were committed to joining a church, they would accommodate our special situation.

James and I attended service at our church a few weeks prior to our move and explained the situation to our rector.  We were a bit surprised when he said he needed time to reflect and would follow up with us.  A few nail biting days later, we spoke with him and were truly shocked when he said we would not be able to get married at the church.  Parish policy states you must be active members in good standing to be married in the church and, he reasoned, living in San Diego we wouldn’t meet those criteria.

After a few minutes of crying, I frantically called our wedding planner, who also couldn’t believe the decision.  James and I felt like we were starting all over again, but now we were months behind and getting married during one of the biggest wedding weekends.  Church after church was booked or closed for renovations.   We have one option we hope to confirm this week, but this has been a pretty big hiccup in our planning and added stress as we settle in a new city.  Fingers crossed we will have a positive update on the situation in the coming weeks.
