A nice little jog

I finally ran my half marathon this weekend. And by ran, I really mean a slow jog 🙂 All in all, it was great and I enjoyed it. Of course, it is a lot easier to say that in retrospect!

I went to bed really early on Saturday night to make it easier to wake up the next day. Headed downtown to meet up with Tristan and Laura and we caught the bus to the start line around 6:15am. I have to admit that the bus ride to the start kinda freaked me out because it seemed like the bus kept going…and going..and going. I was convinced that it was longer than 13.1 miles, but the driver assured me that it was accurate.

The first 5-6 miles of the race were really easy and my legs felt great. Of course, then the rainstorm opened up and poured on everyone for a good ten minutes and I got soaked. And cold. After that, I had a really hard time warming up and by the time I hit mile 9, running got REALLY difficult for me!

One of the weird things about distance running that I now completely understand is how strangely addictive the pain is. Sounds ridiculous, right? Around mile 11, I was seriously cursing myself for volunteering myself in the run. However, now that it is 24 hours later and my muscles are recovering, I am already considering trying another half in Denver in October. Now that I know what they are like and what they are about, I am thinking that it would be fun to give it another try!

On a completely separate note: I am assuming most people who follow the news have read or heard about the two American journalists that got sentenced today to 12 years of hard labor in North Korea. As it so happens, these two women also work for the same media company as my old college roommate. When I realized that, the story took a turn for the personal. It definitely opens your eyes a bit more when international relations land smack in the middle of your backyard…or your friend’s backyard.
