Q: How the groom should pick up on hints to select the perfect engagement ring – the 4 C’s?
A: I have been designing engagement rings for years, I actually started my business doing more engagement rings then I could count. It’s a very personal intimate process with generally with a man, it’s a happy time for the groom but also nerve wracking. Most of them have no idea about diamonds, and it is a big expense. As a certified gemologist and woman, I was able to help steer them through the process so the recipient would jump down and say YES. I believe that the BEST case scenario is if a couple picks out a ring together. If he wants it to be a surprise, I suggest asking the groom to ask her/his friends or sister for specifics as they most likely told them. Another great social asset for a groom is a pinterest engagement ring board, so many millennials use this for inspiration.
When it comes to the 4C’s it really is all about price point to better determine quality and cuts within his budget. I like to say there are 5 C’s now as “conflict free & CANADIAN” is extremely important in any engagement ring I design. DIAMONDS UNLEASHED just launched a line of engagement rings in January 2016 and I like to say we are “re-thinking” the act of engagement. Not only are the rings beautiful and slightly untraditional with an edge, they also have a wonderful give back component to help support women’s education. Each ring has a scholarship component. Now women can say not only is this diamond beautiful, but it helped educate women in inner city schools on technology and coding. My mantra for DU is “EDUCATION IS EVERYTHING”, now a couple and engage in their future together and give back by providing scholarships to support young women.
I also believe that 5th C is so important when choosing a stone. All of the diamonds used in our engagement ring collection are from CanadaMark. Dominion Diamond Corp, which means each stone is trackable and traceable in an ethical sustainable manner from mine to consumer.
Q: When it comes to selecting the ultimate wedding band, what are musts one should look for?
For example: are infinity bands better, so you always have one piece you can wear alone? What types of bands fit better with certain diamond cuts /engagement rings?
A: The wedding band comes after the engagement ring, so bride and groom can shop for this together. The most important thing to keep in mind is that any band you choose has to look good with the ring. Many brides opt for a simple band made of the same metal as the engagement ring, it doesn’t have to have stones and can be a beautiful platinum band with a knife edge. I think simple bands look best with round cut stones.
If you have an emerald cut diamond, a plain half round plaint band would be beautiful. Cushion cuts look great with traditional two tapered begets, diamond band or a bar set. I also recommend a channel set (all begets) of diamonds all around locked in by a wall of platinum, it’s timeless and can be worn solo. Another great option is a shared prong band, which means two prongs in between each diamond inset. It all depends on taste and price point.
Q: When it comes to bridal jewelry, are their pieces that aren’t utterly expensive that you think look timeless for brides, if so, what are your favorites?
A: Absolutely! There is some really fabulous costume jewelry on the market that looks great for bridal. I also suggest reaching out to family members for heirloom jewelry to borrow for the special day. Brides look beautiful in simple pearls or even rubies. There is a beautiful heirloom in my family, a gorgeous ruby cabochon pin that I wore to my wedding, my step daughter is wearing in her wedding, family friends have worn it and one day my daughters will also wear it. This is a beautiful piece that I wore on my belt, but can also be worn as a hair accessory. Jewelry does not always have to be on skin or traditional to look fabulous.
