Coho Salmon caught from Elk Creek on Dec. 27
Brandon Sanner, of Edinboro, caught this coho salmon from Elk Creek on Dec. 27. Coho salmon haven’t been stocked by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission in PA waters since 2003. New York, Michigan, and Ohio discontinued stocking of coho salmon in Lake Erie by 1992. Salmon stocking was abandoned for the more popular steelhead program. Salmon quickly die after attempting to spawn, while steelhead may return to Lake Erie tributaries for several years. These salmon occasionally caught by anglers are most likely strays from the Canadian salmon stocking program or from other states that continue to stock salmon in the Great Lakes.
