Changing Your Last Name

Marriage license, check! Now, if that was the only step needed to officially change your last name, but there are a few more important action items that need to happen!

  1. Get your marriage license – and be sure you have a few copies of it in case it wasn’t automatically sent to you.
  2. Change your social security card – go online to the Social Security Administrations website and fill out the application for a new social security card. You will then mail your application to your local Social Security office and it usually takes ten days to process. Your number will not change!
  3. Now you’re ready to change your license – bring all of your new identification documents: your marriage license and your new social security card. Don’t forget your old license!
  4. Change your bank accounts – this one is super important if you will have a joint account. You will need to take your new drivers license and your marriage license.
  5. All the biggies are taken care of – but don’t forget the places that might not be so obvious: your employer, post office, alumni associations, insurance companies, voters registration or passport office.
