ATTACK OF THE JELLYFISH!!!!
So, I thought it was about time that I said hello to everyone from the beach! We finally made it to warm weather and lovely sand, and we are definitely enjoying it! We are staying in a town called Montañita, and we are having a great time. We found out that our hostel does SCUBA certification for pretty cheap, so of course, we took them up on it, and as of tomorrow–assuming we survive the dives–we will be certified. We did our first two ocean dives today, and they were great. We went to this island that is 30 minutes off the coast, and there were tons of fish everywhere!! I´d never really done anything like it, so I was just in awe. Of course, I spent the majority of the first dive trying to figure out that buoyancy thing, and definitely have my fair share of knee scrapes from when I couldn`t figure it out and hit the ground. Oh well. Pablo–our instructor–threw some iodine and powder on them, so they`ll be great. (supposedly) The story of the day, however, is that we got stung by jellyfish! We had finished our first dive, and our instructor told us we had to do an open water swim without any gear on, just to prove that we could swim. He moved the boat to the other side of the island, and we had to swim over to it. We didn`t think it was a big deal, but about half way across Steve started yelling and swearing and grabbing his neck. Turns out, there were jellyfish in the water, but you can`t see them from the surface. One had wrapped the tentacle around Steve`s neck, and it had gotten intertwined in a necklace he was wearing, so it just kept stinging him. OUCH! He decided not to signal to the boat, so we kept swimming, and we were like 20 meters from the side of the boat, and my entire upper body started stinging. Apparently, the bastards had gotten to me as well, although nowhere near as bad as Steve. Long story short, we got out of the water, and Steve has this nice “necklace” of swollen red bumps circling his neck, and I have a few little red marks all over the place. Pablo was like, “Ooops, I forgot about the jellyfish.” Yeah. Thanks for that! 🙂
Other than the attack of the jellyfish, things have been lots of fun. As I said, we finish our certification tomorrow, but I think we are going to hang out here through the weekend so we can relax on the beach. There is really good surfing in Montañita, apparently, so I might rent a board or take a lesson and see if I can bang myself up even more. Who knows. The only time I ever tried to surf was in Puerto Rico, and I distinctly remember smacking my head on the board and marching out of the ocean in a huff. I`ll keep you posted on how this time turns out!
