I am travelling with a Mexican Jesus…
…who, only yesterday, ordered a “soap and cheese sandwich!” It´s great–everyone down here thinks that Steve is either Mexican or Puerto Rican, but even better is that so many people have told us that he looks like Jesus! On Wednesday, the night before we went to the equator, a bunch of us went out to a bar in Quito, and this kid, Ian, started telling Steve that he was Jesus, and that he would go to his masses, should he ever decide to preach. Then, to top it off, he got down on the floor of the bar, and started to kiss Steve´s feet! Gross!! It was actually pretty funny. He later started calling me Mary after the Virgin Mary…strange kid, let me tell ya!
We´ve been in Otavalo since Friday morning, which means that we have survived our first “real” bus ride. It was only 2-2 1/2 hour ride, but we were definitely a little paranoid about our luggage walking away with someone else. It was in the storage compartment under the bus, and I kept sticking my head out the window every time we stopped, just to make sure that my bag hadn´t grown legs! Of course, it was fine, but you never know! Just the other day, a girl in our hostel got held up at gunpoint on the street. Granted, she had a purse with her which was fairly stupid, but still! Yikes!
Otavalo is really cool. The huge market was yesterday, and there were so many handmade crafts and authentic Incan weavings and stuff. I bought an Alpacan scarf that is really warm, and this leather bracelet. Steve got some sunglasses and a frog pen thing and this native shirt that is bright yellow–he is actually wearing it right now!
Anyway, we leave Otavalo tomorrow morning, and I think we are headed into this hostal that is in the rainforest, off by itself. It´s supposed to be pretty nice, but I hope we manage to find it alright!
