Fuimos a la Mitad del Mundo!

So I have realized that internet is addictive when you have it 8 buildings down from your hostel!

Anyway, we went to the Mitad del Mundo today, more commonly called the equator. It was really cool. We went to this little family run museum that has the true equator running through the property (They built a huge monument back in the day to tribute to the French scientists who had discovered the equator, but, in fact, it was not the equator, and was off by like 100 meters or something. Figure, it was the French!)
Anyway, we did a tour and got to see some interesting demonstrations with the Corealis effect–the guide put a tub of water on the equator, north of it, and then south of it, and showed us how the water drained clockwise, counter clockwise and then straight down. It was a difference of like 10 feet, but it really made a difference. We also did this experiment where you could try to balance an egg on a nail on the equator since the forces are equal there. I balanced it on the first try and though it was really easy, but no one else in the group could get it! Steve ended up getting his to balance, but it fell over a few seconds later. We still counted it though, cause we rock!

Anyway, we are headed out of Quito tomorrow, and going 90 km north to a small town called Otavalo. They have an indigenous crafts market every Saturday, so we are going to check that out. Other than that, not sure of the plans, but I am sure I will post them here when we figure it out!
