Say goodbye to the ogre mountains!

Whew! So we made it over the Appalachians, and I am definitely psyched about that one! The mountains actually never got bad until the border of West Virginia and Virginia, but they were pretty big! We took route 311, which everyone later told us is called the “Mountain of Misery Tour” because of the number of big, steep, and windy passes! We went over 3 or 4 big mountain passes that were like 5 miles of 8% uphill grade, but at least the downhill was fun! Circled around Roanoke in Virginia, and finally made it to my Aunt’s house in Greensboro, North Carolina, where we have spent the past few days hanging out and washing clothes! We’re going to head south tomorrow, so hopefully we should be in Miami by the end of the month–we’ll see!

I blew my tire out pretty big the other day, so that was kind of cool! It was Monday, the day we were going to arrive at my Aunt’s house, so we only had like 40 miles for the day. My front brake had been kind of loose, so we tightened it, but neither Steve nor I thought to make sure we had tightened it straight. Of course, we didn’t, and it turns out my brake was squeezing my actual tire instead of the metal rim. Long story short, I was going down a big hill on a busy road, braking to make sure I didn’t run over and grates or anything, when POP! The whole tire blew up and made this wicked loud noise–I actually thought for a second that I had sent a rock flying into the side of a car and was waiting for someone to yell at me! Luckily, it was just my tire, so we had to spend a little bit changing everything out. Oh well–at least we caught the screwed up brake!

We spent this past Saturday night at a fire station, so that was cool. We rocked into this tiny town in Virginia called Boones Mill, and we asked the fire station if there was anywhere in town to camp. They offered the side of the firehouse, and we got to spend the evening in their lounge room, watching “Cops” with the firemen. The man on the night shift even gave us a tour of the place, including all the trucks and gear and stuff. Pretty cool

Anyway, running out of time on the computer. Will write soon!!
