Living it up in the city of country music!
I know it’s been awhile, but we honestly haven’t seen any internet since we left Pensacola! Anyway, the past week has gone pretty well (and I’d like to add that my new bike seat is WAY better than the old one!)
So we discovered that Alabama is a pretty long state and we ended up riding through it for almost a week. Surprise, surprise, it is beautiful! I actually really enjoyed it–really green and some friendly people.
On that note, good story to share: we were heading into Northern Alabama the other day, trying to get to this campground, and we realized we had to cross this lake on this bridge–and of course, the bridge didn’t have any sidewalk or anything. So Steve and I were like, what the hell, we’ve gotta cross, so just started to ride our bikes down the lane. Well, a few semis and cars zoomed past us (and pretty annoyed, I’m sure) and then this big old semi comes up behind us. Long story short, I think he felt bad for us and was trying to help us out, so he sat behind us for the entire mile-long bridge, not letting any cars go around and essentially giving us the entire road to ourself. Not sure if you can picture this, but imagine two little bikers, pumping as fast as we can, then a huge semi truck blocking the road, followed by a mile long line of cars, all waiting for these two idiot bikers to get their asses off the road. It was sweet.
Anyway, we found a really nice campground there–at Lake Wheeler–so we stayed a day just to hang out and play in the lake. We got into Tennessee the next day, and promptly rode through a town called Pulawski, which is apparently the current headquarters for the KKK. Sweet. We followed this tremendous move up by going through a small town called Chapel Hill, which we soon discovered is the birthplace of the founder of the KKK. Yeah, we were on a roll. We had noticed everyone seemed angry and not cool, but this definitely explained it!
Know what else? We met a guy the other day who is also biking around the country! Crazy, eh? He has gone 12,000 miles and been through 31 states. What are the odds of running into him?!!
Anyway, we’re in Nashville now, spending the day in the city to check things out. We got in yesterday, but we haven’t gotten a chance to do much other than check out the public library for internet and stuff (which may sound stupid, but this is seriously the best library I have ever seen. It’s like four stories and all marble and stuff–craziness) We’re going to spend the rest of the day here, checking out the country music stuff, and then take off tomorrow into Kentucky. We’ll head up there and visit Mammoth Caves, and then we’re into West Virginia/Virginia to ride ourselves (somehow) over the Appalachians.
Wish me luck!
